Great British People

The Queen
Our current queen is Elizabeth II. She became Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain in 1952, at the age of 25. She is married to Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Together they have had 4 children: Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward.

The Queen has many residences around Great Britain such as Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Balmoral Castle. When the Queen is at home the Royal Family's personal flag, known as the Royal Standard, flies above the property.

Winston Churchill
Journalist, artist, soldier are some of the roles Churchill took on during his life. But he is most famously remembered for his role as Prime Minister during World War II. He was a great orator and made many speeches which moved and united the people of Great Britain.
Churchill is also known for his quotes. By the end of his life he had become a drunken misogynist and was often heard insulting women in witty ways. Here is a famous Winston Churchill quote. He was at a dinner party and a lady called Bessie Braddock said to him: "Sir, you are drunk."
Churchill replied: "And you, madam, are ugly. But in the morning, I shall be sober."

William Shakespeare
One of the most famous playwrights of all time, Shakespeare lived and wrote during the 17th century. Many parts of his life are still a mystery. But we do know he was born in Stratford-upon-Avon and then later moved to London and worked for the Chamberlain's Men. He wrote beautiful sonnets but also a variety of plays in different genres: historical, tragic-comic, tragedies, and romances. His most famous plays are probably Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Macbeth and A Midsummer Night's Dream. His work heavily influenced the English Language, with idioms like ‘Foul Play' and ‘wearing your heart upon your sleeve'.
